The firm Bornay Aerogeneradores was awarded the Alicante Chamber of Commerce's prestigious Innovation Prize on November 25. Over 30 years, the company based in the Alicante town of Castilla has turned into Spain's market leader in the manufacture of small-scale wind turbines.

Founded and presided over by Juan Bornay, the firm is well known in the small wind power sector and makes wind turbines with up to 6 Kw of power. Its products have been exported to over 40 countries, from Angola to South America, including France, Germany, or the USA. It has even loaned products to provide energy to the Juan Carlos I Antarctic Base.

Throughout its 40 years of business, Bornay products have served to provide energy and water to the most remote spots on the planet in a clean, ecological, and economical way. For such endeavours, the firm won a NOVA award for innovation from the Valencian local government, the Generalitat, as well as a Sol y Paz Prize from the Terra Foundation for its business record. It was also a finalist under consideartion for the Spanish Prince Felipe Award.

Currently, the firm from Castalla, Alicante, boasts energy self-sufficient facilities which combine Bioclimatic elements with alternative energies from both wind and photovoltaic solar sources. Bornay group turnover for 2009 was 2.5m euros. The Bornay group also has 17 workers employed on direct contracts.
