During the last 30 years, Victron Energy has built an international reputation for technical innovation, reliability, and build quality. We are widely known for introducing several pioneering technologies such as the 4 stage adaptive charging and the PowerAssist© technology of the MultiPlus.

Our aim is to provide people with reliable AC power, whether at sea, on the road, working or at home. Our systems are installed worldwide in boats, commercial and recreational vehicles, remote households and in buildings, as a back up power supply.

Can the Multi help to prevent overload when shore power or generator power is limited?

Yes, there is no better product than the Multi for that purpose:

  1. In a first stage, the PowerControl functionality will limit battery charge current if otherwise an overload would occur.
  2. As soon as the total AC load exceeds the available shore or generator power, the Multi will switch from battery charger to inverter function and will operate in parallel with the external AC supply and add sufficient AC power to prevent an overload. This is a unique feature of the MultiPlus: the power from the MultiPlus simply adds up to the power from the external AC supply. The sum of both is available on one output.
The AC current limit of the external AC supply can be set with a potentiometer on the Multi Remote Panel.

Does the MultiPlus operate in parallel with any AC generator?

Yes, as far as we know.

The MultiPlus will even operate in parallel with low power so called "inverter" generators.

How do I configure one or more Multi's?

There are 4 possibilities:

  1. Dip Switches
A limited number of parameters can be set with dip switches in the unit. See the manual.
  2. VEConfigure
A very convenient and easy to use tool is VEConfigure. VEConfigure software can be downloaded free of charge from our website.
A MK.2b interface is needed to connect the PC or laptop to the Multi.
All parameters can be programmed with VEConfigure.
To download VEConfigure, please go to Software on our website.
  3. VE.Net
All parameters can be programmed with the VE.Net panel.
  4. Remote programming
All parameters can be programmed from a website with the VE.Net Connectivity Module.

How many Multi units can operate in parallel?

Any number of units can operate in parallel, be it in single phase, three phase or split phase configuration. However, battery capacity and DC cable cross section makes stacks of more than 6 units per phase unpractical.

  • 6 units 24/3000/70 in parallel will supply 6 x 3 = 18 kVA of AC power and
    6 x 70 = 350 A charge current.
  • 3 stacks of 6 units in a 3 phase configuration will supply 3 x 18 = 54 kVA of AC power and
    3 x 350 = 1050 A charge current.

I have a 1000 W generator. I want to use it to power electric tools, a microwave and a small aircon. Some electric tools, and also the aircon, do trip the generator as soon as I connect them. Apparently the start-up current is too high. Is there a solution?

Yes, there is a solution.

Run a Multiplus in parallel with the generator. A Multi 12/1600/70 will add sufficient power to the Honda. The combined power of the Honda and the Multi will be sufficient to start-up the aircon and to the tools.

I have an electric stove on board, that takes up to 6 kW (26 A) from my 10 kW generator. But my shore supply is only 16 A (3,68 kW) I also have air-conditioning, but I cannot use it on the 16 A shore supply. Is there a solution?

Yes.

The solution is to install a MultiPlus 24/3000/70. When running in parallel with the shore supply the total output will be 3,68 + 3 = 6,68 kW (29 A), enough for the electric stove and also enough to cope with the start-up current of the air-conditioning. Note: Installing one or two MultiPlus units would also allow to downsize the generator to 5 or 6 kW.

Is three phase and split phase operation possible?

Yes.

The MultiPlus is in fact the only inverter/charger that can be programmed for full three phase, two leg three phase, split phase and single phase operation. And any number of units can be paralleled.

The standard Multi Control Panel has an analogue potentiometer to set the shore current limit. Is there also a digital control panel for the MultiPlus?

Yes: the VE.Net panel. Several MultiPlus units and battery monitors can be controlled with one VE.Net panel. And several VE.Net panels can be plugged in the network: the panels will automatically synchronise with one-another and all products connected to the VE.Net network can be controlled from any panel.

For an introduction to VE.Net, please see: http://www.victronenergy.com/product.php?productid=174

What is the best way to prevent overload of 2 external AC supplies (generator and shore supply)?
  1. One solution is the Multi Duo Control Panel. The Multi Duo Control Panel has two potentiometers.
    • One potentiometer is on the side of the panel and normally not accessible. This potentiometer is used to set the AC current limit of the generator.
    • The second potentiometer is user accessible. This potentiometer is used to set the shore current limit, which may vary from one shore connection to another.

  2. Another solution is to install VE.Net. Current limit setting of two AC supplies is a standard feature of the VE.Net panel.

What is the difference between true parallel operation (PowerAssist, with one output) and Power Support operation?

Example with Phoenix MultiPus:
Shore supply: 16 A (3,68 kW)
Phoenix MultiPus 24/3000/70: 3 kVA (13A)
The MultiPlus will operate in parallel with the shore supply and the sum of both is available on one output: 3,68 + 3 = 6,68 kVA (29 A)

And up 6 units MultiPus can be paralleled, so:

  • With 2x MultiPus 24/3000/70 and a 16 A shore supply, the output will be 3,86 + 3 + 3 = 9,86 kVA
  • With 3x Multiplus and a 16 A shore supply, the output will be 3,86 + 9 = 12,86 kVA (56 A)

Will the output of one or more paralleled Multi's show a short break when the external AC is disconnected?

No.

In fact the MultiPlus is the only inverter/charger with seamless transfer. All loads (computers, clocks, etc.) will continue to operate when the external AC is connected or disconnected.
